Recommended Dementia Education Agenda

Please note: Changes may be made to the order of the curriculum to account for scheduling needs.  However, we recommend the schedule below for optimal learning of material, especially in the High School Career Centers.

*Others may opt to do 6-8 hours of training per day to complete curriculum within one week.

Use these activities to create an environment where the students let go of what they think they knew about dementia, learn how to be a team and allow themselves to be vulnerable, and learn how to be flexible when caregiving isn’t going their way or they need to adapt quickly to a new situation.

Preparing to Meet your Buddy and Test

Classroom Conversations: Here we would like you to discuss in your classroom setting what it would be like to have the barrier of communication through conversation and how your students see themselves connecting with their buddy when they visit with them. Utilize some of the films suggested to spark that conversation.

Using some questions like the following can be helpful:

  •          How did that film make you feel?

  •         What was the positive moments and what were the negative?

  •          How can we shift our focus to connect and give better care?

Film suggestions to review for discussions about connection and communication in professional caregiving.

This PBS project brings some of the film clips right back here to your home town/state of Bloomington IN at Jill’s House Assisted Living and Memory Care. You can find all three of these at the link provided.
